In a bizarre incident that has left residents of Mbare scratching their heads, a group of scammers has been targeting unsuspecting passersby at Mupedzanhamo Grounds. The scammers approach people, holding an object and asking if they know what it is and what it does. If the person responds, they’re handed a paltry sum of $5 and told they’ve “won” something.
However, the celebration is short-lived, as the scammers then claim the person has been “initiated into Satanism” and demand that they hand over all their money. The victims are warned not to breathe a word about the encounter, lest they face of dire consequences.
The scammer’s modus operandi involves threatening the victims with madness or a lifetime curse if they resist or argue. Out of fear, many victims end up handing over all their money. To add insult to injury, the scammers provide the victims with transport fare and a small stone, instructing them to throw the stone while saying “Sekuru, I’ve arrived – please return my money.” Predictably, no money is returned.
Three victims came forward yesterday, sharing their harrowing experiences. One lost a staggering $430, while another parted with $310. A third victim, who wishes to remain anonymous, lost $89. The victims are now left counting the cost of their encounter with “Sekuru Malawi.”
Vendors operating in the area describe the situation as dire, with many customers avoiding the area due to reports of thieves. “It’s a serious problem,” said one vendor. “We’re losing customers because of these scammers. We wish the police would step in and put an end to this.”
The incident highlights the need for increased vigilance and security measures in the area. Residents are advised to exercise caution when approached by strangers and to report any suspicious activity to the authorities immediately. The police are urged to take swift action to apprehend the scammers and bring them to justice.
