Panashe Takavarasha, a 37-year-old shop supervisor at Spar Supermarket in Harare has appeared in court for allegedly refusing to accept the Zimbabwe Gold (ZiG) currency, the country’s newly introduced local currency.
Takavarasha is facing two counts of contravening the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe Act.
The incident occurred on June 16 when Sydney Chatora, a 40-year-old soldier, went to the Spar Market Square store to purchase a loaf of bread using ZiG.
According to Newsday, Takavarasha reportedly told Chatora that the supermarket did not accept ZiG and only accepted United States dollars.
Chatora left without the bread and made a police report about the incident, which led to Takavarasha’s arrest.
The matter came to court with prosecutor Nomsa Kangara presenting the case against Takavarasha.
Takavarasha was remanded out of custody and is scheduled to appear again in court on July 4.
The case has sparked concerns about the effectiveness of the government’s efforts to address inflation and stabilise the economy.
