In a shocking display of fan frenzy gone wrong, a Central Region Soccer League match between Shabanie Mine and Gwanda Pirates at Maglas Stadium on Sunday descended into chaos, forcing officials to abandon play. The match, which drew a crowd of 1,400 spectators, saw stones and bottles flying, fans clashing, and two individuals stabbed amid the bedlam. Vehicles belonging to players and officials were also vandalized, with eyewitnesses describing the scene as a “war zone.”
According to reports, the controversy began with a disputed refereeing decision that saw a penalty call reversed, enraging Gwanda Pirates fans and sparking a violent reaction that lasted for nearly three hours. A furious Gwanda Pirates official claimed they were “ambushed like animals,” with even their families in the VIP section not spared.
The Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) has vowed to take swift disciplinary action and implement tighter security protocols to prevent such incidents in the future. “Violence has absolutely no place in our game,” ZIFA said in a statement, adding that they are working closely with law enforcement and stakeholders to restore trust and ensure accountability.
National police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed the violence but dispelled rumors circulating online about gunshots being fired. Two victims, Simbarashe Zifungo and Victor Pachawo, had their vehicles damaged, and both men were injured in the melee.
Gwanda Pirates accused Shabanie Mine of failing to provide adequate security, claiming their media team was beaten up, their vehicle damaged, and expensive equipment destroyed. However, they denied involvement in the stabbing of two Shabanie fans.
The Central Region Soccer League (CRSL) has condemned the violence, pledging to reinforce safety and security protocols at future matches. Investigations into the incident are ongoing, and ZIFA says the public will be informed of the findings and subsequent disciplinary measures. One thing is certain – the beautiful game just got a whole lot uglier.
