Trailblazing dancehall artist Winky D cast an irritated figure and stopped his performance over poor sound quality in Masvingo.
Winky D, born Wallace Chirumiko, stormed Masvingo on 20 October 2023 for the Lake October Festival at Caravan Park. The festival’s thrilling lineup included Enzo Isall, Feli Nandi, Selmor Mtukudzi and DJ Liz. Rapper Holy Ten, who hails from Zaka and stoked controversy in January by throwing jabs at Winky D, also entertained the crowd in Masvingo.
After fellow artists kept the crowd on its feet, Winky D invaded the stage after midnight and evoked excitement when Green Like Mi Garden came on. After facing the ecstatic audience, he began rocking them with his infectious energy.
However, Winky D’s energy was sapped by a sudden glitch in the sound. The microphone got jumpy, affecting his delivery. He quickly paused and stared at his team and the sound engineer before telling the band to start the song again.
Green Like Me garden started again and the sound terribly glitched and he stopped totally.
An irate Winky D lashed:
“Yoh, yoh, Engineer, set it good. Engineer, don’t spoil a good party. We are here to party.”
As the music went dead silent, the Masvingo fans broke into song to express their frustration, “Siyanai naro ziGaffa muno muvengerei?”
The show organisers then went on stage to check and assist with the sound as Winky D, his brother Laya, his manager Jonathan Banda and the crew stood aloof.
The sound engineer and organisers managed to fix the shoddy sound and Winky D grabbed the mic again. He said:
“If I don’t perform today, I’ll perform tomorrow. So party we a party. We want to kickstart the party right now. Turn it up!”
The Gaffa then belted Dreams from his 2023 album, Eureka Eureka.
“You Want To Sabotage Him?”
Social media users reacted to the drama as Winky D performed in Masvingo.
Samax:
“Engineer engineer engineer, how many times did I call you 😮”
Mr Big:
“Manje mukada kuti sabotager hatidzokw futiii🙆♂️”
Zimcelebs:
“Sound iyo bhooo here😂😂😂😂”
