Central Province in Zambia is grappling with an alarming rise in S3xually Transmitted Infections (STIs), with a staggering 32,547 cases reported in just the first six months of this year.
Chibombo District tops the list with 6,848 cases, followed closely by Kapiri Mposhi at 6,338, and Mumbwa District with 4,946. Breaking down the numbers, Syphilis accounts for the largest share with 8,779 cases, trailed by male urethral discharge at 7,883, Pelvic Inflammatory cases at 7,245, and vaginal infections at 6,198.
These concerning statistics were revealed at a Provincial Health Promotion Technical Working Group meeting in Kabwe.
The high incidence of STIs in the region underscores the need for enhanced awareness and education on sexual health. Previous studies have highlighted the limited access to information on S3xual Reproductive Health (SRH) among young people in Zambia, contributing to unwanted pregnancies, unsafe abortions, and STI/HIV infections.
To combat this, comprehensive sexual and reproductive health education (CSRHE) programs have been implemented in some schools.
These initiatives have shown promise, with participants citing benefits such as gaining knowledge on SRH, supportive teachers, and engaging video content.
