The Meteorological Service Department (MSD) has issued a warning regarding the likelihood of violent storms in various parts of Zimbabwe, particularly in the Matabeleland region, as the 2024/2025 rainy season takes effect this week.
In anticipation of the potential for weather-related emergencies, the Civil Protection Unit (CPU) has activated its national disaster response systems to ensure readiness.
Although rainfall is expected to be minimal in October, forecasts suggest a shift to normal to above-normal precipitation as the season progresses, coinciding with the anticipated La Niña conditions across Southern Africa.
A specific three-day weather advisory predicts severe, isolated showers in Matabeleland North and parts of the northern country, with a notable drop in temperatures expected on Tuesday evening.
The MSD warns that moisture streaming in from the southeast coast will lead to cloudy, cool conditions in Matabeleland South and other southern regions, accompanied by light rain and drizzle.
In proactive measures, CPU director Mr. Nathan Nkomo revealed that a disaster contingency plan for the rainy season has been established following a two-day planning meeting with over 70 stakeholders.
The government’s concerted efforts through the CPU and MSD emphasize the importance of community vigilance and preparedness in the face of potentially disruptive weather, aiming to mitigate the impacts of severe storms and flooding.
