A suspect arrested by the police for stealing copper cables belonging to the Zimbabwe Electricity Transmission and Distribution Company (ZETDC) has implicated the company’s security guards in the crime.
Raymond Dhliwayo, the suspect, was caught by the police after a tip-off from members of the public who had seen him stealing cables from a ZETDC installation.
During his arrest, Dhliwayo allegedly revealed that he was not acting alone, but was aided by security guards who were supposed to be protecting the company’s property.
According to the police, Dhliwayo confessed that he had been working with two security guards, who had been demanding bribes from him to allow him to steal cables.
He also claimed that the guards would often provide him with information on the best times and locations to strike, and would sometimes even accompany him during the thefts.
The police have launched an investigation into the allegations and have already arrested two security guards who are believed to be involved in the crime.
The suspects are expected to appear in court soon to face charges of theft and corruption.
The incident is just one of many cases of cable theft that have plagued Zimbabwe in recent years, with millions of dollars worth of copper being stolen from power transmission lines and substations.
The thefts have caused widespread power outages and disruptions to the national grid, and have been linked to organized crime syndicates.
