A high-ranking police official in Tanzania’s capital, Dodoma, has been ousted from her position after sparking outrage with her insensitive remarks about an alleged gang-r@pe victim.
The controversy began when a disturbing video surfaced earlier this month, showing a young woman being brutally ass@ulted, prompting widespread condemnation across the country.
As four suspects denied involvement in the attack, the police commander ignited further fury by suggesting that the victim was involved in s3x work, implying that her profession somehow justified the heinous crime.
Her comments were met with swift backlash, with many accusing her of downplaying the severity of the victim’s experience.
In response, Tanzania’s national police force issued an apology and announced the commander’s transfer, acknowledging that her remarks were unacceptable and undermined the force’s commitment to supporting victims of s3xual vi0lence.
“The police force would like to apologise to everyone who was touched and offended by the statement circulating in the media while monitoring is being done to find its accuracy,” national police spokesperson David Misime said on Monday.
Mr. Msime continued, stating that Dodoma Regional Commander Theopista Mallya had stated that “she did not deserve to be treated that way” in remarks made to the local newspaper Mwananchi, despite the fact that the woman was a s3x worker.
