A 17-year-old boy from Zimre Park, Ruwa, has been charged with fraud after allegedly swindling unsuspecting high school students out of US$2,640.
The teenager, whose name has not been disclosed, is accused of falsely promising to facilitate their membership into the SADC junior parliament program.
According to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), the boy posed as a member of the Junior Parliament in July 2024, luring students with promises of joining the prestigious Junior Motivators SADC Parliament program.
He exploited their ambition and trust, collecting money from them under false pretenses. The teen has been brought before a Harare magistrate to face the consequences of his actions.
His deceitful scheme has left many students feeling betrayed and financially disadvantaged.
This incident serves as a cautionary tale about the dangers of fraudulent activities and the importance of verifying information before trusting others with money.
“He charged them US$62 for registration and uniforms and US$50 for a camping trip to Domboshava Resort.
“After receiving payments, he disappeared. The total amount involved was US$2,640. Nothing was recovered.”
The teenager was released into the care of his guardian. He will return to court on September 5, 2024.
