In a shocking display of municipal majesty, the City of Bulawayo has reached new heights of desperation, proudly accepting a donation of 30 brooms and some used drum bins from Altcom Pvt Ltd. Because, clearly, what the city really needed was a good sweeping – literally.
The donation was graciously received by His Worship Senator David Coltart, the Mayor, who appreciated the gesture, emphasizing the importance of cleanliness in the city. One can only imagine the mayor’s speech: “Today, we mark a new era in Bulawayo’s history. With these 30 brooms and used drum bins, we shall conquer the streets, one piece of litter at a time.”
The city’s requirements are staggering: 500 bins in the Central Business District alone, and yet, they’re celebrating a donation of 50 bins. It’s a drop in the ocean, but hey, every little bit counts, right? Senator Coltart’s challenge to residents to desist from littering is a noble one, but it’s hard to take seriously when the city itself seems to be struggling to provide basic services.
In a city where the infrastructure is crumbling, and the economy is on its knees, perhaps it’s time to rethink priorities. Maybe the city could try attracting businesses instead of relying on handouts of brooms and used bins. Until then, we’ll just have to sweep our problems under the rug – literally.
