Mai TT, the popular comedian, recently served a three-month sentence for absconding community service back in 2015 during her time at Chikurubi Female Prison. This revelation came to light after her lawyer shared the information in response to inquiries from H-Metro.
The comedienne was originally serving a nine-month sentence, which included three months for failing to complete her community service obligations in 2015. She had been convicted of domestic violence. Additionally, her sentence included an effective six months for theft of trust property, which involved using a hired car as collateral for a loan.
In June, Mai TT received a 12-month sentence for the theft of trust property, with six months suspended on the condition of good behaviour. However, her appeal against the conviction and sentence in the theft case was successful, leading to questions regarding her accountability for the defaulting community service.
Mai TT’s lawyer, Tafadzwa Muvhami, clarified that her sentences ran concurrently. The three-month jail term for defaulting community service was served alongside the effective six-month sentence for theft. As her conviction and sentence for theft were set aside by the court, Mai TT has already served the three months for defaulting on community service.
Muvhami explained that they had to wait for the three-month period to pass before appealing against the theft conviction. Typically, when a litigant fails to comply with a court order, any appeal becomes void. Therefore, Mai TT had to serve the three-month sentence from her previous conviction before her appeal could be heard.
The lawyer based his arguments on Mai TT’s conviction, excluding the sentence that was automatically overturned. He successfully contended that Mai TT did not have any intention to permanently deprive the victim of her money or the hired car.
Under normal circumstances, Mai TT was expected to be released around the middle of the following month.
