Thokozani Khupe ‘s Cry

Thokozani Khupe ‘s Cry

Opposition legislator Thokozani Khupe has thrown down the gauntlet, demanding answers on the sugar tax funds meant for cancer treatment. Introduced in the 2024 budget, the tax aimed to rake in funds for cancer-fighting initiatives. But Khupe’s inquiry reveals a glaring lack of transparency and progress.

Over $20 million collected, $38 million disbursed, but where’s the accountability? Khupe wants a comprehensive update on the fund’s status, procurement progress, and measures to ensure transparency and efficiency.

The statistics are alarming: 36% of deaths attributed to non-communicable diseases, with cancer being a major contributor. Hospitals struggle to cope with late-stage diagnoses and critical equipment shortages, leaving patients to suffer.

Khupe emphasizes that the fight against cancer is not just a medical issue but a moral imperative and national priority. Every day of delay costs lives, and Zimbabwe can’t afford to wait.

Meanwhile, controversy surrounds Tenderpreneur Wicknell Chivayo, accused of benefiting from a $437 million government contract for cancer equipment without a tender process. Chivayo denies the claims, but the question remains: where’s the transparency?

Khupe’s demand for a ministerial statement is a call to action. It’s time for the government to provide clarity on the sugar tax fund and cancer treatment initiatives. The people of Zimbabwe deserve nothing less.
