Police at the Plumtree Border Post have successfully disrupted a significant smuggling operation, seizing three South African-registered vehicles loaded with contraband valued at over R600,000.
The authorities apprehended three suspects involved in the operation, identifying them as Mcedisi Ndlovu, Bhekithemba Nyoni, and Tazoona Muza.
Chief Superintendent Cabinet Thomas, who oversees policing in Bulilima and Mangwe districts, confirmed the arrests occurred between 3 a.m. and 6 a.m. when an anti-smuggling team intercepted the vehicles along the Bulawayo-Plumtree Road.
The vehicles, which included two Toyota Hiluxs and a Mercedes Benz Sprinter, were discovered transporting a diverse load of smuggled goods, such as building materials and groceries.
Investigations revealed that some vehicles had crossed into Zimbabwe through an unofficial entry point while another used an official border port but failed to declare its cargo.
The Zimbabwe Revenue Authority (Zimra) has been called to assess the contraband, and the suspects are anticipated to appear in court soon.
Chief Supt Thomas pledged continued efforts in battling smuggling, emphasizing the need for the public to adhere to proper importation procedures to avoid penalties under the law.
