Three individuals were charged with extortion after allegedly posing as military officers.
Munyaradzi Charakupa, aged 48, from Burnside in Bulawayo, Tawanda Mangi, a 32 year-old from Helensvale in Harare, and 49-year-old Victor Jaja, residing along Toubuk Road in Harare, faced Magistrate Evelyn Madzikatire regarding the serious allegations.
The suspects reportedly used their impersonation of military personnel to intimidate and extort victims for money.
Authorities are actively seeking a fourth suspect, Percy Pemba, who has evaded arrest and remains at large.
The case has raised concerns about the increasing prevalence of impersonation scams in Zimbabwe, showing the need for public awareness and vigilance.
During the hearing, the prosecution presented evidence showcasing the defendants’ alleged fraudulent activities, which they claim have caused significant distress to victims.
The outcomes of this case may set a precedent for how similar extortion cases are handled in the future, as the legal system grapples with the implications of such deceptive practices.
