Three individuals, Robert Makwiza, Robson Mugwagwa, and Patricia Rusike, appeared in court on the 19th of June, charged with defrauding the City of Harare in a fake housing scheme.
The trio allegedly formed a housing co-operative called Sunungukai using forged documents.
According to the prosecutor, Rufaro Chonzi, the suspects identified a vacant piece of land behind Nazarene Church in Warren Park and obtained a fake certificate of registration for their co-operative.
In 2016, the City of Harare converted housing co-operatives to pay schemes, and the accused allegedly took advantage of this policy. On June 1, 2023, they submitted an application to the City seeking regularization of the land they had invaded.
The magistrate, Dennis Mangosi, granted each of the suspects a $100 bail and ordered them to appear in court again on August 2. The City of Harare is represented by Addmore Nhekairo, its housing director.
