Three officials from the Vehicle Inspection Department (VID) were brought before the Chinhoyi Magistrates’ Court on charges of criminal abuse of office. Gerald Chitete, Silas Mabaso Zamba, and Doniel Mhlanga stand @cc_sed of unlawfully granting a class four driver’s license to an applicant without conducting the necessary testing procedures.
According to a statement issued by the National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe (NPAZ), the trio, who are employed by the VID, were responsible for examining student drivers through yard and road tests. However, it is alleged that they showed undue favouritism towards Linda Rwauya, the applicant in question, by awarding her a driver’s license without her undergoing the required testing procedure. This action is considered a breach of their duties as public officials.
The irregularity came to light when a whistle-blower brought the matter to the attention of the authorities. Subsequent investigations led to the arrest of the three VID officials, who now face charges related to their alleged misconduct.
Following their appearance in court, the @cc_sed individuals were granted bail in the amount of US$200. The matter has been remanded to the 27th of March 2024.
