A resident of Tsholotsho, identified as Lathi Nyathi, is currently fighting for his life at Mpilo Central Hospital after a harrowing encounter with a hippopotamus at a local dam.
Reports from the community indicate that Nyathi was att@cked while attempting to access water, which has become increasingly scarce due to prolonged dry spells causing boreholes in the area to dry up. Councillor Felix Tshuma confirmed the incident, noting that the situation has compelled villagers to share water sources with wildlife, leading to dangerous encounters.
He expressed concern over the lack of safe drinking water and highlighted that this is the first recorded incident involving a hippopotamus in the area.
Tsholotsho Rural District Council chairperson Rophas Ndlovu mentioned that the Campfire management program is arranging to support Nyathi’s family and cover his medical expenses.
Villagers are calling for increased awareness and measures to prevent further @ttacks, as the presence of such wildlife poses a significant risk, especially when basic resources like water are so limited.
Efforts to obtain a statement from the Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority representative, Tinashe Farawo, were unsuccessful.
As villagers seek to navigate their water crisis, the implications for both human and animal populations are significant and require urgent attention.
The community hopes for swift action to ensure their safety and the establishment of better water management solutions.
