The surviving girl’s aunt revealed the deep emotional turmoil she had been experiencing, stemming from feelings of neglect and accusations from her family, which led to previous self-harm behaviors.
Mpho’s mother expressed her heartbreak upon learning that her daughter had opted for such a drastic measure without seeking support, indicating that she seemed fine just before leaving for school.
Additionally, a separate but equally devastating incident occurred at Evaton Primary School, where three young siblings died of suspected poisoning under ambiguous circumstances, prompting police inquests into both tragedies.
Gauteng Education MEC Matome Chiloane conveyed the department’s deep sorrow over the loss of these young lives and emphasiSed the need for mental health support, urging individuals in distress to reach out to help organiSations such as the South African Depression and Anxiety Group.
