On November 4, 2024, at approximately 8:30 p.m., passersby discovered Mhlanga’s lifeless body near the TM turnoff bus stop in Cowdray Park, Bulawayo. She had suffered a fatal st@b w0und above her right breast and multiple cuts on both hands.
Despite being rushed to Mpilo Hospital, Mhlanga succumbed to her inj_ries while receiving medical attention.
A crucial lead emerged on November 5, 2024, when Playmore Mpofu, 27, a suspect in a robbery case, revealed during interrogation that he had committed multiple robberies in Cowdray Park alongside Ndebele and Sebatha.
This information prompted a community-assisted investigation, culminating in the duo’s arrest. Under questioning, Ndebele confessed to att@cking Mhlanga and ste@ling her handbag containing $30, with Sebatha’s assistance.
Ndebele claimed Sebatha st@bbed Mhlanga because she recognised him as a neighbor. Authorities recovered the flick knife used in the crime.
Police praised the community’s involvement in aiding the investigation and urged residents to revive Neighborhood Watch Committees to foster unity and prevent similar tragedies.
The arrest of Ndebele and Sebatha brings hope of closure for Mhlanga’s loved ones, who lost an innocent life to senseless vi0lence perpetrated by individuals known to the victim.
