Two Traffic police officers, Constable Tabeth Mumhangwe and Sergeant Major Nziradzemhuka, were arrested on October 13, 2024, for corruption. They allegedly demanded US $200 from two vehicle owners, Milton Fungai and Tendai Musuko, involved in a road accident on October 12, 2024, to release their cars without VID inspection .
The officers, stationed at ZRP Avondale Traffic, were charged with criminal abuse of office under Section 174 of the Criminal Law Codification and Reform Act, Chapter 9.23. The arrest was facilitated by the Southern Africa Regional Anti-Corruption Organisation (SARACO) and the Police General Headquarters Internal Investigations .
During the arrest, Constable Mumhangwe threw US$70 on the ground, which was recovered by a SARACO member. However, US $130 hidden in a Suzuki vehicle with registration number AFN 2216 was not recovered, and its ownership remains unclear .
The Police Chief Commissioner General, Godwin Matanga, has always issued a warning that corruption will not be tolerated and those engaging in corrupt activities will face consequences .
