Despite a government ban for anti corruption protests, scores of people were arrested and detained in Kampala, Uganda’s capital.
After marching on the parliament building, the demonstrators, including a well-known TV personality and other young leaders, were promptly arrested and sent to court.
President Yoweri Museveni, who has been in power for over four decades, had warned protesters that they were “playing with fire” by confronting the regime.
The protests were planned on social media, sparked by popular outrage about persistent corruption charges against high-ranking politicians.

The demonstrations were inspired by recent rallies in neighboring Kenya, which successfully persuaded the government to cancel planned tax increases.
Despite the restriction, demonstrators marched to parliament, brandishing posters criticizing corruption and demanding change.
However, they were greeted with a large police presence, roadblocks, and riot cops who forcibly imprisoned many of the demonstrators.
