The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) has launched a comprehensive programme to provide support to expectant mothers across the country.
The programme, which was launched last week, aims to improve maternal health and reduce the risk of d3ath and disability among expectant mothers.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), Zimbabwe has one of the highest maternal mortality rates in the world, with an estimated 454 de@ths per 100,000 live births.
Under the programme, UNFPA will provide training and equipment to healthcare providers at public health facilities, with a focus on emergency obstetric care.
The agency will also distribute essential medicines and medical supplies to ensure that expectant mothers have access to quality care throughout their pregnancy and childbirth.
“Every day, thousands of women die needlessly due to complications related to pregnancy and childbirth,” said Miranda Tabifor, UNFPA Representative in Zimbabwe. “We are committed to changing this reality and ensuring that every woman has access to quality healthcare services during pregnancy and childbirth.”
The programme will also focus on improving access to family planning services, with a view to reducing unplanned pregnancies and preventing unwanted births.
This is particularly important in Zimbabwe, where many women have limited access to education and economic opportunities, making it difficult for them to plan their families.
To achieve its goals, UNFPA will work closely with government ministries, local NGOs, and community groups. The agency will also provide support to pregnant women through its hotline, which will offer counseling and referral services to those in need.
