US$16,000 to US$20,000 Damages :Mbare Musika Fire

A devastating fire tore through the bustling Magaba informal industrial area in Mbare last week, causing damage estimated between US$16,000 and US$20,000. Harare City Council officials confirmed the preliminary loss estimates and are considering compensation for affected traders.

Councillor Denford Ngadziore, chairperson of the City of Harare’s Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) committee, said the committee would formally record the figures and discuss comprehensive safety and planning reforms. Proposed measures include:
– Finalizing lease agreements for Magaba tenants
– Replanning the area to prioritize fire safety
– Installing fire hydrants
– Designating zones for hazardous materials

The fire may have been caused by a discarded cigarette stub, highlighting the need for safety regulations. The council is developing a code of conduct to address unsafe practices, such as smoking near flammable goods.

The Magaba complex is a vital part of the local economy, housing thousands of small-scale manufacturing and repair operations. The fire has reignited calls for urgent reforms to improve safety and secure the livelihoods of informal traders.

The SMEs committee will convene next week to discuss the comprehensive reforms. The council’s efforts aim to prevent similar incidents and ensure a safer working environment for traders.
