The High Court has reinstated a University of Zimbabwe (UZ) student who was suspended for serving a cake containing marijuana to another student.
Takudzwa Calvin Nyazema argued that his suspension, which happened just one day before his final exams, was unfair as reported by Newsday.
He took his case to court, claiming he wasn’t given a chance to explain himself and that the suspension violated student conduct rules.
Nyazema was suspended on October 21 after he allegedly made and shared the dr_ug-laced cake with another student, Farai Nyakunzu, at the Harare campus in September.

He said he confessed to wrongdoing only because university security pressured him.
He wanted the court to let him take his exams, return his student ID, and access the university’s online system since he missed classes due to the suspension.
In court, UZ Vice-Chancellor Paul Mapfumo defended the suspension, saying it was a legal administrative decision.
He argued that Nyazema couldn’t claim harm because the suspension was justified.
However, Justice Priscilla Munangati-Manongwa ruled that every student has the right to fair treatment and due process.
She noted that almost a month had passed since Nyazema was suspended, during which other students continued their studies.
The judge pointed out that there was no proof that Nyazema actually had the drug cake, and the suspension shouldn’t last indefinitely.
She expressed concern that not letting Nyazema take his exams could force him to repeat the year, even though he hadn’t been found guilty.
The court decided that Nyazema had a valid case and ordered that he be allowed to resume his studies and take his exams.
