Pastor Paseka Mboro has found himself at the center of controversy after a video surfaced showing him holding several individuals hostage, including a young girl, with a cutlass. The footage, which has rapidly spread across social media, shows Mboro inside a building he is believed to own, surrounded by his armed bodyguard.
The shocking video has elicited strong reactions from South Africans, who have condemned Mboro’s actions. One viewer expressed frustration, predicting that Mboro would use his followers to deflect blame, while another questioned the confusing nature of the video, unsure if Mboro was freeing or detaining the individuals.
Outside the police station, Mboro defended his actions, claiming he had gone to the school to retrieve his grandchildren, who he asserts are his son’s children. He alleged that the children’s maternal grandmother and the school principal were obstructing his efforts to regain custody, despite him having funded the funeral of the children’s mother himself.
Mboro also presented a video showing his son’s injuries, which he attributed to an assault by the school staff. He accused the grandmother and the school of using the children to extract money from him and vowed to continue fighting for their return.

Gauteng’s MEC for Education, Matome Chiloane, has denounced the incident, explaining that it stems from a custody dispute between the children’s paternal and maternal families. According to Chiloane, the children, enrolled in Grade RR and Grade 2, were not released by school staff without the grandmother’s consent, prompting Mboro’s dramatic intervention.
The matter has been reported to the police, and Chiloane noted that support services would be provided to help the affected teachers and students deal with the trauma of the event.
