On 15 September at Rusike Primary School in Goromonzi, a yet-to-be-identified suspect met a fatal end while allegedly attempting to steal a transformer belonging to the Zimbabwe Electricity Supply Authority (ZESA).
The individual was electrocuted during the act and, at the time of reporting, his body remained entangled in the transformer cage, a grim testament to the dangers of tampering with high-voltage equipment.
Dr. George Manyaya, ZESA’s stakeholder relations and communications manager, confirmed the incident, stressing the risks associated with such illicit activities.
“An electrocuted vandal is still hanging in a transformer cage in Goromonzi,” he stated, underscoring the severity of the situation.
ZESA personnel are expected to arrive at the scene to conduct a thorough investigation, as well as attempt to identify the deceased and notify his family.
Manyaya’s statement points out the potential hazards involved in vandalism against electrical infrastructure.
The incident reiterates the importance of public awareness regarding the safety risks and legal consequences of engaging in theft of utility property, urging communities to actively protect these essential services.
