A tragic incident occurred in Bulawayo when a 27-year-old man, Tichaona Moyo, lost his life while scavenging for food at the Ngozi Mine dumpsite.
This area, situated between Richmond and Cowdray Park, serves as the city’s primary dumping ground and is home to around 400 households that struggle without essential services such as electricity, water, and proper sanitation.
On Wednesday, Moyo, who was known to engage in waste picking, was struck by a refuse truck after he reportedly fell off while attempting to gather discarded materials.
Eyewitnesses noted the dangers that waste pickers face, often navigating hazardous environments in search of survival resources.
After the accident, Moyo was rushed to Mpilo Central Hospital but unfortunately succumbed to his !njuries shortly after admission.
This incident spotlights the dire living conditions and the desperation faced by many residents in the area, forcing them to engage in precarious activities just to put food on the table.
