Early this week, residents from several Mutare areas were sent into a panic when they woke up to the stench of darkly colored, foul-smelling water coming from their taps.
There are real concerns that the valuable liquid may have been tainted, endangering public health, as reports from certain suburbs suggest foul smelly water was being poured from taps.
According to Manicapost, Some homes in Greenside, Dangamvura, Zimta Park, Bernwin, Chikanga Phase One, Two, and Three, Natview Park, and Hobhouse had foul-smelling black water coming from their taps, according to a check conducted this week by The Manica Post.
Mr. Blessing Chafesuka, Acting Town Clerk for the Mutare City Council, stated that he had received reports of tainted water coming from taps in the aforementioned suburbs.
“Yes, we received some reports on suspected contaminated water running from taps in those suburbs, and we have conducted our own investigations as those who were posting messages on the social media were not owning up and giving conflicting statements.
“We took samples for laboratory testing, and we are waiting for clinical results.
However, preliminary investigations could not substantiate the allegations,” said Mr Chafesuka.
Residents of the impacted suburbs, however, have voiced their displeasure about the possibility of contracting waterborne illnesses, while some contended that they were already exhibiting symptoms of those conditions.
“This matter should be treated with utmost urgency because public health is at risk,” stated Mr. Mathias Madakadze of Chikanga.
“At this time, we are unsure when the clinical results will be out and what people who have been exposed to the contaminated water are supposed to do while the results are being released.” Do we have to keep drinking the tainted water?
