The World Health Organization (WHO) is optimistic about containing the mpox outbreaks in Africa within the next six months.
WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus announced that the first vaccine shipment will arrive in Congo soon, where over 18,000 cases and 629 de@ths have been reported.
Although Africa has received a limited number of vaccines, the WHO is working to accelerate access and launch education campaigns to raise awareness about mpox prevention.
The organization estimates that 230,000 vaccines will be sent to Congo and other affected countries, but notes that this is still less than 15% of the doses needed to control the outbreaks.
Mpox, also known as monkeypox, is a viral disease that causes mild symptoms but can lead to severe cases with painful sores and blisters.
The WHO has declared the outbreaks a global emergency to prompt a robust international response.
