The World Health Organization (WHO) Zimbabwe has urged parents to prioritize vaccinating their children and ensuring they are up to date with their immunization schedules.
This measure is vital in safeguarding not only individual children’s health but also in fostering community protection, also known as herd immunity.
Vaccines have proven to be one of the most successful public health interventions, eradicating smallpox, nearly eradicating polio, and drastically reducing the incidence of diseases like measles, diphtheria, and tetanus.
In recent years, however, a rise in vaccine-preventable disease outbreaks has been observed globally, often due to declining vaccination rates or inconsistent access to immunization services.
Parents have a critical role to play in maintaining and improving vaccination coverage for children. Ensuring that children receive the full suite of recommended vaccines according to the immunization schedule can greatly reduce their risk of contracting potentially life-threatening !llnesses.
Furthermore, keeping children up to date with their boosters helps maintain immunity levels, particularly for diseases that require multiple vaccine doses to confer long-term protection.
