In Mutasa, a woman is accused of scamming her husband out of his savings before abandoning him shortly after he lost his job.
Shockingly, she then moved in with his best friend as a second wife.
Gift Kaaraidze shared his painful story at Chief Mutasa’s community court, detailing how his nine-year marriage fell apart due to the deceit of his wife, Agnes Maitirei, and his friend, who is only known as Naison. The betrayal left him deeply hurt.
Gift explained that he had been searching for Agnes since April when she left their rural home without notice.
After five months, he discovered her living with Naison, about 30 kilometers away from their home. Gift had been married to Agnes since 2015, and he recounted the series of unfortunate events that led to the breakdown of their relationship, which started with misunderstandings in 2024.
Despite hearing rumors about Agnes’s unfaithfulness, Gift chose to trust her. He recalled how she had convinced him to give her his bank cards, which she used to withdraw all of his savings. The day after he gave her money, he returned home only to find that she had disappeared along with their belongings and children.
In a frantic search for answers, Gift reached out to Agnes, but she deceitfully claimed she was staying at her brother’s house. Shortly thereafter, Gift lost his job and had to move back to his rural home. He later found work in Mazowe, but his concerns grew as friends began asking about Agnes’s whereabouts. She had been telling people she was visiting him, although she had not shown up.

After some time, she returned, claiming she felt lonely in their rural home, but even after his job transfer to Nyanga, she went missing again. Gift searched everywhere but continued to come up empty-handed until he eventually ran into Naison in the Sarupinda area. Naison claimed he had not seen Agnes.
However, when Gift showed her photo to villagers, they revealed that Agnes had moved in with Naison. When Gift confronted Naison about it, he denied the claims, and knowing that Gift was looking for Agnes, he moved her to Rusape. A month later, Gift learned that Agnes had returned to Sarupinda.
During this time, Agnes would call Gift from a private number, insisting she would come back home while claiming to be at work. When Gift finally returned to Sarupinda, he was heartbroken to discover that she was living with Naison. He approached her, but she was taken aback and refused to return home with him. This led him to bring the matter to court since he was confused about how his wife ended up with his friend.
Agnes defended her actions, stating that she and Gift had separated in April, claiming he even gave her a divorce token. She said she met Naison while working in Rusape and later moved in with him, adding that her parents were aware of him.
However, Gift dismissed her statements, clarifying that he had only given her a divorce token during a misunderstanding in 2015, which they later reconciled from. He stated they had lived together as husband and wife for nearly ten years and had two children together.
Chief Mutasa decided to adjourn the case until October 5, allowing Agnes time to bring her family to the court. Meanwhile, Naison expressed satisfaction about the court summons, believing it would confirm his marriage to Agnes, insisting he did not betray Gift since they had been separated for a long time. Naison claimed that perhaps Gift was simply upset that he took the woman who had left him.
