A newborn baby’s body was discovered in a dustbin at a university student housing in East London, leading to the arrest of a lady.
The 20-year-old lady was taken into custody and is accused of concealing her birth, according to Eastern Cape police spokesperson Warrant Officer Majola Nkohli.
On Friday, the newborn’s body was found. “The investigation is taking into account the facts surrounding the occurrence. She has an upcoming court appearance scheduled.
At this point, it’s unknown if the woman is a university student. In September 2020, a woman who abandoned her newborn child in a pit toilet received a historic punishment of three years in jail in KwaZulu-Natal.
In the Ntuzuma Magistrate’s Court, the woman entered a guilty plea to attempted m_rder. On social media, the child’s rescue in February 2019 gained widespread attention.
The toddler had to be rescued from the pit latrine for over four hours. Given the circumstances, the woman said she was too ashamed to disclose to her family that she was expecting her third unwed child and kept the pregnancy a secret.
