A first-time mother who underwent a caesarean section at a state hospital in 2016 has taken the Gauteng MEC for Health to court, seeking damages after her uterus was removed without her consent or knowledge.
The woman, who is now unable to have any more children, claims she was a healthy individual when she entered the George Mukhari Academic Hospital to deliver her baby.
However, during the operation, her uterus was removed due to bleeding complications, and she was never informed of this beforehand or offered counseling afterwards.
The mother blames the medical staff for being negligent, leading to her ordeal, while the doctors involved in her care testified that the removal of her uterus was necessary to save her life.
They stated that it was an emergency situation and they had no other option but to perform the operation.
The court heard that the medical staff failed to counsel the patient after the operation as she had discharged herself from the hospital before they had a chance to do so.
The mother is seeking damages from the Gauteng MEC for Health for the loss of her uterus and any future childbearing opportunities.
