A women’s advocacy group, Women For Change, has launched a petition to bar Chris Brown from performing in South Africa due to his history of vi0lence against women.
The petition, which has gained over 3,000 signatures within a day, opposes his scheduled December 2024 concert in Johannesburg.
The group expressed concern that the event would take place shortly after the global 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based vi0lent, stating that Brown’s past, including his 2009 arrest for ass@ulting Rihanna, conflicts with the campaign’s values.
They argue that allowing him to perform undermines efforts to combat gender-based vi0lence in South Africa, a country already facing high femicide rates.
“Women For Change is deeply concerned about the upcoming Chris Brown concert scheduled for December 14 2024 in Johannesburg. This concert will come just days after the world commemorates the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Vi0lence,” their statement read.
“Chris Brown’s history of vi0lence against women, including his 2009 arrest for assaulting Rihanna, stands in stark contrast to the values of this global anti-GBV campaign, especially in a country where femicide is five times higher than the worldwide average.
“Hosting Chris Brown sends a harmful message to survivors of ab_se and undermines the progress we are trying to make in addressing GBV in SA,” the statement continued before listing all the times the singer had had a run-in with the law.
