The Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission (ZACC) has arrested Hosiah Chisango, the Town Clerk of Harare City Council (HCC), on charges of @buse of duty and corruption.
Chisango is accused of irregularly awarding a streetlights tender worth $9.2 million to Juluka Enndo Joint Venture, a company owned by businessman Moses Mpofu, without following the proper procedures.
This is not the first time that Mpofu has been involved in controversy, as he is already facing charges of embezzlement related to a goat supply tender allocated by the government.
Chisango, along with four other officials who are already in custody, allegedly colluded to award the tender to Mpofu’s company without going through the normal bidding process. The ZACC has confirmed Chisango’s arrest and he is expected to appear in court on Thursday to face the charges.
This development comes as a major blow to the HCC and raises questions about the level of corruption within the council. The arrest of Chisango, who is one of the top municipal executives, suggests that the authorities are serious about tackling corruption and holding those responsible accountable.
The Zimbabwean government has been making efforts to combat corruption in recent years, and cases like this demonstrate that it is taking concrete action against those who breach the law.
