Zambia: MP uncovers 26 health ‘gh0st workers’ receiving salaries for 6 years

This prompted the area Member of Parliament, Twaambo Mutinta, to collaborate with the provincial health office team to conduct a headcount of employees.

The exercise revealed that 26 gh0st workers were allegedly recruited by the previous Patriotic Front (PF) government.

These gh0st workers are reported to have been receiving salaries from taxpayers’ money since 2018, despite never reporting for work after their initial appointments. Letters of appointment had indicated that they were supposed to work in the district.

District Health Director Dr. Joseph Tembo stated that all affected employees were communicated with in writing.

As a result, five out of the 26 have reported for work, while two others have indicated they will report next week. However, 19 employees have shown no interest or response in reporting for work.

“In view of the foregoing, we recommend that 19 underlined employees’ salaries be blocked with immediate effect until further notice,” stated Dr Tembo.

Meanwhile, Mutinta has made a sound warning to the remaining individuals for them to report for work by Monday next week or they risk their accounts being blocked immediately.

“The district’s staff establishment is full but in the actual sense, we have no medical staff in the clinics and these atrocities happened during the previous regime as all the ghost workers were claimed to be recruited between 2018 to 2021.”

“For me, if they do not report by next week, their accounts will be blocked and removed from the payroll,” warned Mutinta.
