Two Chinese nationals have been detained by Zambian police, who have also found 29.9 kg of gold and US$200,000 in cash that were being smuggled out of Zimbabwe.
The gold was kept hidden in compartments on the door panels of a Toyota Land Cruiser Prado registered in Zimbabwe.
The two Chinese nationals are identified as Zhao Yanjing, a girl, and Zhao Changson, a guy, by Zambian police spokesperson Rae Hamoonga.
On August 12, the two were taken into custody as part of an intelligence-led raid.
Journalists were informed by Hamoonga that Mr. Zhao Changson and Ms. Zhao Yanjing, who are thought to have entered Zambia from Zimbabwe through the Chirundu border, were detained by police on suspicion of possessing valuable stones.
“The police, acting on reliable intelligence, initiated an investigation and conducted a thorough search of the vehicle in which the suspects were traveling. During the search, officers discovered a substantial amount of cash and 29.9kg of gold.”
