Zimbabwe’s electoral board, Zimbabwe Electrol commission (ZEC) is facing scrutiny over its handling of the recent recall of Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) members by Sengezo Tshabangu.
Last week ZEC chairperson Priscilla Chigumba has announced the appointment of five CCC candidates to fill vacant senatorial posts and six more lawmakers from the Sengezo Tsabangu-led Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) into the National Assembly to fill the vacant proportional representation seats.
Critics argue that ZEC’s actions, or lack thereof, highlight the need for electoral reforms in the country, drawing comparisons with the Independent Electoral Commission of South Africa and emphasizing the importance of professionalism and independence.
As the debate rages on, with some calling for constitutional amendments to prevent such situations in the future, the spotlight remains on ZEC and the role it plays in Zimbabwe’s political landscape.
