Defence Minister Oppah Muchinguri-Kashiri has defended the new ZiG currency, asserting that it is functioning effectively.
In a post on X, she highlighted that despite initial skepticism, the ZiG currency is proving to be successful.
“They said ZiG would not work; it’s working! Now they are upset that we have our own currency as a nation. The level of unpatriotism is disgusting! Instead of contributing to the success of our nation, they would rather see Zimbabwe fail! Zimbabwe will never be a failed nation!”
The ZiG currency was introduced on April 5, replacing the Zimbabwean dollar, which had depreciated by 80% against the US dollar earlier this year. The new currency is backed by 2.5 tons of gold and $100 million in foreign exchange reserves held at the central bank.

Patriotism should start by the Government itself in ensuring the ZiG can buy all services and products in Zim. One can’t buy a passport or fuel in Zim using the ZiG, which clearly shows unpatriotism by the Government itself.
