The Zimbabwe Gold (ZiG) serves as the official currency of Zimbabwe, with its value backed by gold reserves.
While fractional denominations exist, the ZiG lacks formal subdivisions. The Zimbabwe Stock Exchange utilizes cents, each representing 1⁄100 of a ZiG.
The ZiG marks Zimbabwe’s sixth endeavor since 2008 to establish a new independent currency, aiming to reduce reliance on the US dollar.
However, its introduction has encountered resistance, with both the black market and supermarkets rejecting it, causing inconvenience for local residents in purchasing certain goods.
In a bid to promote the adoption of the new currency, the Government of Zimbabwe has embarked on street campaigns, organizing road shows in the Harare Central Business District.
This initiative was publicized through a social media post on X by Open Parly ZW, urging citizens to embrace the Zimbabwe Gold (ZiG).
The official handles of @ReserveBankZIM and @ZimTreasury were tagged in the announcement.

Went to the supermarket…wasn’t encouraged at all..was asked to live behind some goods because they were limited if buying with ZiG..apparently the supplier was said to be just not accepting ZiG

Even those who have been uncertain about their decision to reject these papers when they witness this madness of advertising a currency, they will be fully convinced that this zig zag thing is not only a gimmick, but also a SCAM!

Do we need to be encouraged ??? As long as i cannot convert my Zig balnce in my bank account to USD or other currencies or convert ZiG to USD at the bank no amount of encouragement can force people to stop looking for usd in the street
