The Grain Millers Association of Zimbabwe (GMAZ) has announced that it will commence the importation of 20,000 metric tonnes of maize each month from South Africa, effective immediately.
This decision comes in response to a pressing need to bolster local maize supplies and ensure that millers can meet the demand for maize products across the nation.
The announcement was made during a press briefing held by GMAZ officials, who underscored the importance of maintaining a steady supply of maize, which is a staple food in Zimbabwe.
The association acknowledged that local production has faced various challenges, including climatic conditions and economic instability, which have adversely affected crop yields in recent seasons.
The association’s decision to import maize from South Africa comes at a time when local production has been inadequate to meet growing demands.
Various factors, such as erratic rainfall patterns, pests, and economic constraints, have contributed to a decline in local maize harvests, which has prompted GMAZ to look outside the country for supplies.
In recent months, the Zimbabwean government has expressed its commitment to enhancing food security through various programs and initiatives aimed at increasing agricultural productivity.
Local farmers have been urged to remain optimistic as GMAZ promises to continue supporting local agricultural initiatives alongside importation efforts.
