Restive civil servants are urging the government to ensure they receive their bonuses in full and not stagger them, as was the case last year. The government recently announced its readiness to pay civil servants’ bonuses but hasn’t disclosed the payment method. The civil servants have also requested the government to address outstanding issues that were agreed upon to enhance their working conditions.
Cecilia Alexander, Chairperson of the Zimbabwe Confederation of Public Sector Trade Unions (ZCPSTU), explained that they have written to the National Joint Negotiating Council (NJNC) to request an emergency meeting to discuss bonus issues. They want clarity on how the government plans to pay bonuses in 2023. The civil servants are in the dark regarding the payment of their bonuses and are seeking clarity from the government.
Obert Masaraure, President of the Amalgamated Rural Teachers Union of Zimbabwe, emphasized that this year’s bonus should not be staggered and called for a new governance culture that prioritizes workers’ rights and well-being. They are demanding that the bonus be provided as a single payment, allowing teachers to prepare for the festive season.
Tapedza Zhou, Secretary-General of the Educators Union of Zimbabwe, stated that they are awaiting an update from the government. Civil servants are demanding at least a 100% bonus in both foreign and local currency. The ZCPSTU has been advocating for a US$540 salary for the lowest-paid employees, but negotiations with the government have yet to reach an agreement.
