The National Bl00d Service Zimbabwe (NBSZ) is facing a critical bl00d shortage, particularly of Group O, which is projected to last less than 24 hours, prompting an urgent call for donations.
CEO Lucy Maruo highlighted the significance of this group due to its status as the universal donor, making it essential for treating patients in emergency situations.
Despite over 50% of the nation’s bl00d donors being from Group O, supply is depleting rapidly as hospitals use this vital bl00d type extensively.
Maruo has appealed specifically to individuals aged 16-65 to join in donating bl00d, a community effort deemed essential especially as the festive season approaches when hospital demands typically rise.
She noted that replenishing bl00d supplies is crucial during this period when the need often outstrips available resources.
The NBSZ has achieved notable success in its annual collection goals, having amassed 71,544 units of bl00d by the end of November, which exceeds contributions from the previous year.
In light of the ongoing shortage, the festive season campaign aims to collect an ambitious target of 7,460 units before mid-January.
Clinics will remain open throughout the holidays, allowing donors to contribute conveniently, though they will be closed on major public holidays.
Maruo celebrated the increase in donations but reiterated that the urgent need for Group O bl00d cannot be overlooked, as lives are at stake during this busy time.
She encouraged both new donors and those who have previously given bl00d to contribute during this critical shortage.
The NBSZ is committed to ensuring all patients receive the bl00d products they need.
With such high demands, the organization is mobilizing communities to raise awareness of the importance of regular bl00d donation.
As Zimbabwe prepares for the festive season, Maruo’s passionate plea seeks to motivate individuals to prioritize bl00d donation amidst holiday celebrations.
Increased donations will not only meet immediate health care needs but also foster a culture of altruism and community support.
