The government says the country requires 2 800 more schools to meet the demand.
Primary and Secondary Education’s permanent secretary Moses Mhike says the country needs to address the shortage.
“We have a shortage of schools across all our provinces.
“We have a need of about 2 800 schools that are needed for us to be able to have all our children access education.
“And so that we do not have our pupils travelling 10, 15 or so kilometres to access educational services,” says the ministry.
According to the permanent secretary, the current status is: Primary schools: 6 798, Secondary: 2 980, 1 624 satellite schools earmarked for upgrading.
