Raymond Sifiso Dabengwa, the former president and CEO of MTN Group and an Eskom board member, has passed away at the age of 66.
The Zimbabwean-born businessman d!ed of colon cancer in Johannesburg.
A family member confirmed the news, describing Dabengwa’s death as a significant loss to the family and the South African corporate world.
“Sifiso contributed greatly to the business landscape and economic development,” they said, adding that it is too early to discuss further details.
Dabengwa, who was married to top South African executive Phuthi Mahanyele-Dabengwa, had a notable career in South Africa.

He was also well-connected with high-profile figures, including South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, with whom he worked at MTN.
Born in Zimbabwe on April 5, 1958, Dabengwa moved to South Africa in the late 1970s. He completed his B.Sc. in Electrical Engineering at the University of Zimbabwe and later earned an MBA from Wits Business School. Dabengwa worked for Eskom, where he led the successful national electrification program, and subsequently became the CEO of MTN Group.
He left MTN in 2015 following a major regulatory fine but continued to serve on various corporate boards. Dabengwa’s impact on South African industry and his legacy in the corporate sector will be remembered.
