In a heartrending turn of events, a devastating accident has shattered the lives of a young Zimbabwean family and left two nations in mourning.
Lorenzo Palu (36), his beloved wife Forgive Palu (31), and their precious three-year-old son, Lwandile, were among the 10 lives lost in the tragic incident, which occurred as they were heading home to South Africa after a joyful celebration of their fifth wedding anniversary in Bulawayo.
The Palu family’s anniversary was meant to be a joyous milestone, marking five years of love and commitment.
Instead, their dreams of a future filled with shared memories and milestones have been tragically cut short. Lorenzo, a highly regarded product and UX designer known for his innovative spirit, and Forgive, a dedicated pre-school teacher and aspiring entrepreneur behind “Sweet Soul Cakes,” were both celebrated for their passion and contributions to their fields.

Lorenzo’s work was widely respected in the UX community, highlighted by his participation in the 2022 UX South Africa hybrid conference, while Forgive’s teaching and business endeavors reflected her boundless creativity and dedication.
Their sudden and heartbreaking loss has left family and friends grappling with an overwhelming sense of grief. Sifikile Tshuma, Forgive’s mother, struggled to convey the depth of her sorrow: “It’s hard to put into words the pain we’re all feeling. Lorenzo was not just a talented designer; he was a mentor, a friend, and a pillar of strength for many. His passing feels unimaginable. We can’t express how deeply hurt we are. It’s too much to bear.”
Lorenzo’s brother, Amigo Bondiya, echoed the profound sense of loss, saying: “We are at a loss for words to lose such a young family under such tragic circumstances. This is truly difficult to accept.”
The tragic accident involved a bus carrying 67 passengers and crew, and resulted in multiple fatalities and injuries. Mzansi Express, the bus company, has issued a statement providing details about the incident. Emergency services were quick to respond, transporting the injured to Makhado and Elim Hospitals for care. Mzansi Express is working closely with law enforcement to manage the aftermath and has promised to provide more information as it becomes available.
“We are working diligently with law enforcement and health services to treat and identify all passengers affected by this tragedy,” the statement said. “We ask for patience as we navigate this difficult time. The management of Mzansi Express deeply shares in the sorrow felt by the Zimbabwean community and extends our heartfelt condolences.”
As the Palu family’s loved ones come to terms with their immense loss, this tragedy serves as a poignant reminder of the fragility of life and the profound impact of such unforeseen events. The void left by Lorenzo, Forgive, and little Lwandile will be felt deeply, and their memory will be cherished by all who knew them.
