In a twist of humour mixed with a dash of skepticism, Zimbabweans have taken to social media to criticize the recently commissioned Gunguwo Bridge.
This new infrastructure project, aimed at connecting Gokwe North District to Mashonaland West Province, has garnered attention for its significance and the lighthearted banter it has inspired.
The Gunguwo Bridge, a vital link between Gokwe North and South, Mashonaland West, and Matabeleland North, endured a challenging history. Swept away by floods in 2008, repairs remained on the backburner until 2018.
Its completion in October 2023 brings relief to the region’s residents, who have faced difficulties accessing essential services during the rainy season.
Despite the celebration surrounding its commissioning, some Zimbabweans are expressing concerns about the bridge’s size and safety.
Social media users have playfully questioned whether the bridge lives up to its task of providing a safe and efficient crossing. Criticisms range from its design to its flood resilience, with some suggesting it might be “old school” in design.

It not safe that bridge it’s a death trap to motorist’s. The sides were supposed to be covered strongly. It can not withstand floods meaning it blocks water and will be washed away.
