The Zimbabwean Government is working to repatriate the bodies of 10 citizens who tragically lost their lives in a bus accident in South Africa’s Limpopo Province.
The Mzansi Express bus, carrying 67 passengers from Bulawayo to Johannesburg, overturned on the N1 highway near Makhado town on Tuesday night, resulting in the fatalities and !njuring 35 others.
According to media reports, Zimbabwe’s Consul-General to Johannesburg, Mr. Eria Phiri, has confirmed that the identities of the deceased have been confirmed and their next of kin notified.
The Consulate is now collaborating with the relevant authorities to facilitate the return of the bodies to Zimbabwe for burial.
This devastating incident has sparked an outpouring of condolences and support for the affected families, with the Zimbabwean Government ensuring that all necessary assistance is provided during this difficult time.
“We will share more information at a later stage,” he said.
The Zimbabwean embassy is set to provide crucial consular services to facilitate the repatriation of the accident victims, working closely with the South African government to ensure a seamless process for their return and burial in Zimbabwe.
Preliminary investigations by the Limpopo Department of Transport and Community Safety reveal that the bus crashed after speeding through a roundabout, resulting in the tragic loss of life and injury to numerous passengers.
Emergency services have since cleared the accident scene, and the injured are receiving medical attention at various hospitals.
In response to the tragedy, South Africa’s Deputy Minister of Transport, Mr. Mkhuleko Hlengwa, is expected to announce a comprehensive intervention plan to address the incident.
Meanwhile, the Zimbabwe Exiles Forum has expressed heartfelt condolences, underscoring the devastating impact of the accident on the affected families and communities.
