The Zimbabwean government has resumed civil works on the remaining 87 kilometers of the Harare-Masvingo-Beitbridge highway, a flagship project under President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s leadership. To date, 493 out of 580 kilometers have been rehabilitated and opened to traffic.
Engineer Jarawani Kangara, Director of Roads, revealed that the project is expected to be completed by the end of August, except for a few bridges. Key components of the project include:
– Road Over Rail Construction: Two road-over-rail projects are underway, one in Beitbridge and another in Mvuma.
– Dualization: A 7.5-kilometer stretch from Houghton Park to Harare’s Central Business District is being dualized, with surrounding roads being rehabilitated for use as diversion routes.
The project has received widespread approval from motorists and residents, who anticipate improved connectivity and reduced congestion. A resident praised the government’s efforts, saying, “This is a welcome development and a testimony of our government’s appetite to improving our roads.” A motorist added, “This is a welcome development as it will go a long way in easing congestion in this area.”
Other notable projects under the Harare-Masvingo-Beitbridge road rehabilitation include:
– Trabablas Interchange: Significant progress has been recorded at this project site.
– Beitbridge-Bulawayo-Victoria Falls Highway: The government plans to devote more attention to this project upon completion of the Harare-Masvingo-Beitbridge highway.
– Emergency Road Rehabilitation Programme: Over 50,000 kilometers of roads have been rehabilitated, and 2,000 structures have been attended to since 2021.
