The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) of Zimbabwe has made significant strides in clearing cases and recovering assets.
Between January and September 2024, the NPA cleared 69,708 out of 101,112 cases, achieving a remarkable clearance rate of 68.54%.
Quarterly Breakdown: – First Quarter (Jan-Mar): 73.94% clearance rate, with 26,391 cases completed out of 35,690. – Second Quarter (Apr-Jun): 65.7% clearance rate, with 21,028 cases completed out of 32,006.
– Third Quarter (Jul-Sep): 65.5% clearance rate, with 21,889 cases completed out of 33,416.
The Midlands Special High Court Circuit also saw impressive results, with a 91% clearance rate and 98% conviction rate for 137 out of 150 outstanding cases.
This success is attributed to collaborative efforts between stakeholders.
Asset Recovery: – The Asset Forfeiture Unit secured preservation orders for property valued at $21 million. – $32 million in illicit proceeds and instrumentalities of crime were recovered by the third quarter of 2024.
International Cooperation: – The NPA received 41 requests for Mutual Legal Assistance, with 36 executed. – Zimbabwe made 38 requests for international cooperation, with half yet to be executed.
